"Jewish Kiev" In 2007 the JFU Community Center "Kinor" offered its visitors a wide spectrum of various programs.This cosy club located in downtown Kiev always meets its guests with affability. For these years the club has got popularity among Kievites and gained its constant visitors. The "Kinor" staff tries to create warm and friendly atmosphere and offer various program - these qualities attract community members and all who are interested in Jewish culture and history.Paying symbolical membership dues each visitor becomes a club member, he can visit all measures, receive free festival tickets held in the JFU. A membership card gives a possibility to receive books and tapes made by the Foundation as presents and to take out a subscription for the Jewish Kiev publication.The club activity is lighted up first of all in this publication which was recognized by the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture as the best National minority publication in Ukraine. Its editor Elena Chuchulashvily was awarded the diploma "For the considerable contribution to the preservation and development of the cultures of Nationalities living in Ukraine".There are about 20 active programs in "Kinor" which are realized by volunteers. Visitors can use the library where the books of the Jewish history, philosophy, Hebrew and literature are collected. The library was created with the Joint Jewish Distributive Committee support. Kinor's visitors also give books to the library from their own libraries.

The center programs

"Women's club" is the program which marked 5 years in 2007. It is headed by Lydia Shkolnik, the club volunteer with great talent for organization, allowed to create "a club in the club" during 5 working years. People visit this club with pleasure.The women's club is one of the most popular and visitable programs of Kinor Community Center. Today there are 53 participants in the club. A lot of them participated at the congress and conference on issues of ethnic minorities. They take active part in the City Jewish community life. The head of the club organizes musical concerts, excursions and picnics. This year the women's club members has spent vacations at the resort "Rakitnoye" in the picturesque place outside Kiev.Lydia Shkolnik invites famous actors, producers and musicians to the club's meetings. National artists of Ukraine Natalia Lototskaya and Galina Yablonskaya, historian Borys Handros, singer Tatiana Nedelskaya, producer Anatoly Borsuk were the club guests in 2007. Later many of the guests became its friends and continue to visit some club's meetings. The National Artist of Ukraine Yan Tabachnik, club's old friend, invited all the participants to his jubilee celebration, and famous journalist Dmitry Gordon also invited them to the "Bulvar" publication 10th anniversary celebration.For the years of the club activity its members became as one family. They celebrate Jewish holidays, birthdays and club anniversaries together. This year in the commemoration of the 5th anniversary of the program the congratulations have been received from "Dom Kino" (Cinema House), "Teatr na Podole" (Theatre on Podol), and ANCCU.

"Galiyorka" is the name of a new program which was started in "Kinor" in 2007. It is a brainchild of Tamara Basauri within which the center pensioners could visit theatres, exhibitions and galleries. Every Friday the program volunteers gathers in Kinor to organize cultural actions for the pensioners. For a few months only the audience of "Galiyorka" has grown, a permanent notice board has appeared thanks to which everybody can get to know the repertory of Kiev theatres in the current month and subscribe to different performances.Summer excursions around Kiev and visiting the literary museum lecture-hall are being planning within the program.

Klezmer band "Nigunim"
The Kiev famous musical group headed by Igor Kazhdan, the famous musician, composer and arranger, has been cooperating with the Jewish Foundation for many years. This group is popular in Ukraine and abroad.

This year the group has toured in many Ukrainian cities and also in Slovakia, Germany and
Austria.In 2007 the band won first place at the Golden Chanukia International festival of Art. In the nomination "The best instrumental ensembles" the group was awarded the prize by the judges, headed by the People artist of the USSR Iosif Kobzon."Nigunim" took part at the Gala concert of the Berlin festival.The musicians play at numerous events in "Kinor" and represent the Foundation at different all-Ukrainian and international actions.

Theatrical approach
The program addressed to all theatre-lovers is carried out by the actress Vera Drizo. The meetings of the program participants with actors of the Kiev Theatre (Left bank) took place in 2007. Irina Melezhkina, the scientist of the Dramatic Art of Ukraine museum, talked about Jewish notable actresses. The meetings dedicated to M.Shagal, D.Oystrah, Y.Vyzbor, K.Duglas, V.Zuskin and other figures of theatre and cinematography were held.

The Agency has been existing in the JFU for many years and helped to dozens of Jews to get married. So, if any Jew hasn't met his soul mate yet or wants to organize a wedding following Jewish traditions, then the "Mishpaha" staff will always help.

"What? Where? When?"
The "What? Where? When?" program invites teenagers to take part in competitions of erudition and quick wit held among the Kiev schools. Its head Galina Babenko organizes trainings for senior students where they get good knowledge and have an opportunity to show their own erudition.

This program is devoted to exhibition activity. Art and photo exhibitions are constantly being held in "Kinor". Beginners and famous painters represent their masterpieces to center visitors.Eduard Mezhula, Eugeny Roytman, photo painter Snezhana Malisheva show their works there in 2007.

"Diplomatic reception"
Having no analogues in other community centers the program gives the club visitors a opportunity to meet Embassy diplomatic employees of different countries. The participants get information on life of Jewish communities in these countries and culture and present life of other people.

"Silhouettes"
The culturogical program held by Anna Rivkina, the scientists of the National Library in the name of Vernadsky, offers to participants lectures on the Jewish culture and history.

Leonid Shemeta's lectures
Musicologist Leonid Shemeta carries out the program which informs about the Jewish composers, history of creation of famous songs,little known pages of the Jewish music history. Participants listen and discuss rare musical archival recordings.Kabbalat Shabbat service is led in the center by Lina Izmailova, Kinor's volunteer, every Friday evening and everybody is welcomed to participate. The ceremony of lighting candles, stories about Jewish traditions, Shabbat songs singing together and some refreshments always take place in a friendly climate.Famous artists and musicians arrange their concerts after Shabbat service in Kinor.

Literary studio "The third gates"
The program invites all poetry-lovers. It is held by the outstanding poet, laureate of many literary prizes Yuriy Kaplan. The studio prepared and published the poetry collection "Burning Fire of roses that cannot be scorched" in 2007 where Russian and Jewish poets' poetry on Jewish themes was collected. The studio gathers poets and participants recite their own rhymes. This year within the Days of Israel in Ukraine the studio has realized the meeting of Israel poets in the State Literary Museum.The club has a few guest programs: twice a month members of women's organization "Amazons" meets in "Kinor". Maimonid the Jewish People University and the Kiev branch of the B'nay B'rith" organization carry out their actions, meetings, and round-table discussions there.In 2007 the Kinor Community Center welcomed a number of delegations from the world Jewish communities containing representatives from different organizations, sponsors of joint international projects. The delegations from Detroit, New York City and Chicago were among them. E. Eskot (France), president of the International Council of the Jewish Women of Europe, paid a special visit.

«Врата в иудаику»
В 2007 году в стенах «Кинора» торжественно открылась программа «Врата в иудаику», предназначенная для старшеклассников – будущих абитуриентов. Программа стала плодом сотрудничества Международного центра еврейского образования и полевых исследований (координатор по Украине – Вячеслав Лихачев) и Еврейского фонда Украины при финансовой поддержке Голландского еврейского фонда. Помогать грызть гранит науки ребятам помогают ведущие украинские и зарубежные исследователи, преподаватели из университетов в области иудаики. Каждое воскресенье в «Киноре» читают лекции по еврейской истории, литературе, философии, этнографии. Педагогическая концепция Международного центра еврейского образования и полевых исследований предполагает практические исследовательские экспедиции как обязательную часть учебного процесса. Экспедиции, или, как их называют в Центре, «полевые Школы» – это не только проверка знаний практикой, но и уникальный по силе мотивационный фактор. Практика показывает: мало, что так способствует формированию сознательного интереса к предмету исследования, как возможность «потрогать его руками» (в том числе и в буквальном смысле). У Международного центра еврейского образования, за два года плодотворной работы накопился солидный опыт проведения учебно-полевых семинаров, в том числе – для школьников. Уже получившие широкое освещение в прессе и завоевавшие признание у коллег известные крымские Школы по иудаике для старшеклассников «Евреи и окружающий мир: этнокультурные контакты». Организаторы программы «Врата в иудаику» после интенсивной подготовки проводят полевые школы для активных участников программы «Врата в Иудаику». Состоялся ряд эпиграфических, этнографических и археологических учебных экспедиций, в которых принимают участие ученики программы. Ведь за вратами в иудаику, открывшимися для старшеклассников в Киноре, находится удивительный и захватывающий мир еврейской цивилизации, о которой еще столько предстоит узнать и сегодняшним школьникам. Сейчас в программе участвует 35 школьников, возрастом от 15-17 лет. Дети представляют разные школы, многие видят своё будущее в гуманитарной сфере.

Встреча шаббата.
Волонтер центра Лина Измайлова организует и проводит встречу шаббата каждую пятницу. Все желающие могут зажечь свечи, послушать рассказ о еврейской традиции, в общем кругу спеть еврейские песни; им предлагается небольшое угощение. На еврейские праздники на шаббат приглашаются артисты, музыканты, устраиваются самодеятельные и профессиональные концерты. Поэтому если вы хотите встретить Субботу в кругу друзей и приобщиться к еврейской традиции – приходите к нам на Шаббат!

Гостевые программы.
Помимо собственных программ, организованных Еврейским фондом, общинный центр «Кинор» предлагает своим посетителям несколько гостевых программ, которые также регулярно проходят в центре. Два раза в месяц в клубе собираются на свои заседания члены женской организации «Амазонки»;
народный университет им. Маймонида и киевское отделение организации «Бнай-Брит» проводят здесь свои мероприятия – встречи, вечера вопросов и ответов, круглые столы. Так одним из самых резонансных в 2007 году был круглый стол с участием директора украинского филиала Института гуманитарно-политических исследований В.Д. Малинковича.
В 2007 году общинный центр принимал целый ряд миссий из еврейских общин мира, в состав которых входили активисты различных организаций, спонсоры совместных международных проектов. Среди них – делегации из Соединенных Штатов Америки (Чикаго), представители Бнай-Брит Европы, международной организации «People to People».
